The details See all destinations

Often described as “Little England” was developed by the British in the early 19th century, situated over 1800 metres above sea level and in the centre of Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya is blessed with a cool climate, breath taking views of villages, meadows, mountains, Streams, waterfalls and greenery. The British turned Nuwara Eliya into a typical English village with its colonial houses, mansions, parks, churches, gentlemen’s clubs, golf course, horse racing circuit, trout streams and old brick post offices. It is an interesting reminder of colonial times. Nuwara Eliya is overlooked by Piduruthalagala, the highest mountain of Sri Lanka. The perfect climate helps in the growing of fresh vegetables and fruits. Strawberry farms are very popular as well as the Ambewala dairy farm.

Gregory Lake is one of the main attractions in Nuwara Eliya, built by Governor William Gregory between 1872 and 1877. The lake was used for recreational activities during the British period and a great place for a picnic or just relaxing.

Victoria Park is named to commemorate 60th Jubilee coronation of Queen Victoria in 1897. This is a great place to breath fresh mountain air when a break is needed from a busy life. A favourite place for children too.

Nuwara Eliya is popular for its tea plantations which will treat tourists to breath taking views. The cool temperature, humidity and rainfall of the Hill Country helps to produce a high quality of tea. The Tea industry was first introduced to the country by James Taylor, a British planter in 1867. Since then Ceylon tea has become more favourable worldwide. Tourists can also visit the Ceylon tea museum and participate in a remarkable tea picking experience. Then make your way to the tea factory and witness the process of raw tea leaves become proper tea. Then after enjoy a freshly brewed cup of Ceylon tea, a truly Sri Lankan experience!!!
