Situated in the west coast of the island, a peaceful beach town. It is the closest town to the International Airport and therefore ideal to start or end your journeys in the island. Negombo was governed by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British rulers. There is much evidence of this such as churches built by the Portuguese. A very high percentage of the population in the west are Catholic with Portuguese related surnames such as “Fernando”. There is also the Canal system built by Dutch. Although Negombo’s history began with the spices today the economy is primarily dependant on the Fishing industry and Tourism, however still poplar for cinnamon, ceramics and brass ware.

Very popular for fresh caught seafood and the Fish market “Lellama” an auction place for fish.

In conclution Negombo is a good base for tourists.
